Yes! Say hello to Ruislip Lido. You’d be surprised to learn that there is indeed a sandy spot tucked away in London, easily accessible by car or public transport. Is it a beach? Is it a reservoir?

How do you get to London’s Ruislip Lido Beach?

It’s a 40-minute drive from my home in North London, or if you prefer public transport, it’s just a 45-minute journey from Finchley Road tube station on the Metropolitan Line. Even shorter if you live near other stops on the Metropolitan line.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Ruislip Lido? That’s a reservoir, not a beach!” And yes, you would be correct – but this 60-acre lake nestled in Ruislip Forest boasts a sandy beach that can give you a taste of seaside holiday without leaving the city!

Can you Swim in Ruislip Lido Beach?

While Ruislip Lido may seem like a great spot for a swim, it’s sadly not allowed. The water can get quite deep, and there are no lifeguards on duty. So, keep this in mind and enjoy some refreshing paddling as well as various activity options available on the beach.

Best things to do at Ruislip Lido for all ages

Ruislip Lido is the perfect destination for a family day out. My children (12 and 10),love building sandcastles on the beach, feeding the ducks and enjoying the Ruislip playground. But worry not! There’s plenty for us adults too. The Woodland Centre provides a relaxing spot to unwind and enjoy a sunny day.

Let’s not forget about the ‘Ruislip Lido Railway’, the longest 12-inch gauge railway in the UK. And trust me, it’s not just for the children! Take a charming ride through the woods and experience a smile-inducing adventure. What to eat at Ruislip Lido? When it comes to food, the Lido offers a cafe on-site called ‘The Waters Edge’ where you can find a great variety of food and drinks. While we usually pack our own picnic, we couldn’t resist the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and ended up treating ourselves to a latte and some homemade cakes.

Best Time to Visit Ruislip Lido Beach

Ruislip Lido is open all year round, but personally, I find late spring and early autumn to be the ideal times to visit. The weather is pleasantly warm without being too hot, and the crowds are fewer. As for the time of day, a late afternoon visit is my top pick. The place is quieter, the temperature is cooler, and you might even catch a stunning sunset over the lake.

Beach Alternatives to Ruislip Lido: Beaches Near London

If you’re up for a bit more of an adventure, there are fantastic beaches just a few hours’ drive outside London for your next weekend day trip:

1. Southend-On-Sea, Essex: At only 1 hour 15 minutes from London, Southend Beach is the nearest sandy-shingle mix beach to London. Explore the long pier, enjoy the amusement park at Adventure Island, and savor a traditional fish and chips experience.
   
2. Herne Bay, Kent: With a travel time of 1 hour 50 minutes, Herne Bay is a charming coastal town known for its beautiful beach, Victorian architecture, and lively seaside atmosphere. Explore its magnificent promenade lined with vibrant beach huts and take in its rich history and Roman legacy.
   
3. Brighton, East Sussex: Brighton is often known as “London by the Sea,” with an exciting beachfront scene. Iconic Brighton Pier provides endless entertainment options ranging from amusement park rides and arcade games, not forgetting Royal Pavilion! Don’t leave Brighton without visiting to the Royal Pavilion!
